Sex Appealometer for Male Celebs
82MindField's Men
- The Men in My Life
From a very early age, I found them cute and funny. In elementary school, I fell for redheads with freckles and wide smiles; brooding artistic types; big bumbling boys with hearts of gold; and weedy bookish...
Inspired by a fabulous hub by MindField (see link, right) I've decided to air my own secret celebrity crushes. Film stars, TV stars, musicians. Classically handsome or offbeat and quirky -- there is no one thing that I find sexy. Well, that's not entirely true. I like my men -- and that includes my celebrities -- smart. If they're not smart, they can compensate by being goofy and sweet. Goofy, sweet and smart is actually a good combination, too.
So let's get this drool fest started. Ladies, are you with me? Men, you're welcome here, too. More than likely you'll spot someone very much like you on my list:-).

My earliest crushes
As a young, impressionable lass my taste was undeveloped. But certain trends emerged quickly. Pretty boys trumped witty boys trumped bad boys -- for about 3 seconds.
Paul McCartney, the so-called "romantic Beatle" stole my heart at the tender age of 7 (I was 7 -- he was leading the British Invasion). That same year I got an Animals LP for my birthday. This presented something of a dilemma for me, as I was literally unable to choose a favorite among the hunky bandmembers: Eric Burdon (vocals), Alan Price (organ and keyboards), Hilton Valentine (guitar), John Steel (drums) and Bryan "Chas" Chandler (bass). It was pretty much a tossup between Hilton Valentine (more than likely his name had a lot to do with it) and Chas Chandler. But Eric had a sexy deep, gravelly voice. What's a little second grader to do? Become an animal lover, of course!
Which naturally led to my next notable crushes. While most of the girls were swooning over Davey Jones, I declared my favorite Monkee to be Peter Tork ("Ew!!" I can hear some of you groaning. That's the equivalent of choosing Ringo over Paul or John!). Be that as it may, Peter was my choice.
During the same time period, I copped a major thang for another man with "animal" magnetism: Batman, as played by Adam West. Holy catfish! That little chin cleft ... who could resist? Not I. And, not surprisingly, I had the same reaction later on when Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer played the masked avenger of Gotham City.
Rounding out my girlhood celebrity crushes are a couple of blonde/brunette pairings.
Watching the TV series "Here Come the Brides" I never could decide who was cuter, Bobby Sherman or David Soul. I was also a big fan of "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" with a slight leaning toward Robert Vaughan as suave and sexy Napoleon Solo (I just found out Mr. Vaughan earned a PhD from USC -- pretty impressive) over his blonde sidekick, Illya Kuryakin, played by David McCallum.
NOT SEXY
For what it's worth, I watched The Partridge Family faithfully, but David Cassidy never did much for me. Nor did any of the Brady Bunch (if forced to choose one, I'd pick Sam the Butcher:-).
Musicians Make My Heart Go Bump
With the onset of puberty, my taste in men continued to evolve in the direction of bad boys. Those "animals" had left a lasting impression on my budding libido. One whiff of the sex part of sex, drugs and rock n'roll, and it was time to...
"Get it on, bang a gong, get it on!" with the band T Rex, fronted by Marc Bolan. (I like yer hat, Marc.)
Other musician crushes include:
Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music. I chose his version of "Let's Stick Together" as one of the theme songs of my WZLY radio show in college. More to the point, I longed to be the object of his whistle in the song "Jealous Guy."
Another giant hunk packed into a not-too-tall persona was Robert Palmer. I discovered him through his "Sneaking Sally through the Alley" medley (Sally, Susan -- close enough in my book). Basically, I found Mr. Palmer "Simply Irresistable."
Backing up a bit, I loved The Doors, but Jim Morrison died while I was still in my pure, innocent prime. Had I been older, I would no doubt have found him very, very attractive. But being under 12, I was somewhat intimidated by his raw sexuality. Sounds silly now, but it's true.
I made up for it later with Michael Hutchence of INXS, Gavin Rossdale of Bush and Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam.
And then there's Lenny Kravitz. Dorky name for a fiiiiiiiine specimen of manhood!
ONE WHO GREW ON ME
I never cared a whit for Bruce Springsteen in the '70s, but as he's aged (and I've aged), I've come to really appreciate his politics. Not sure if that's the reason, but he's definitely weathered like fine, supple leather!
NOT SEXY
Love their music, but just can't get excited about David Bowie (too many bizarre incarnations) or any of the Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin or U2. I have moments when I think Bono's handsome, but mostly I think he's just way cool but no sex magnet. The Edge is kinda cute, tho.
Of the current crop of so-called rockers, I can't think of a single one to add to this list. Sad.
Studs of the Silver Screen
My list of movie star idols starts out classic but soon turns to eccentric.
Old time faves include John Doe himself, Gary Cooper. Coop sets the standard of unassuming but undeniable sexiness. I also like Jimmy Stewart and Christopher Plummer (with Julie Andrews in "Sound of Music"), Glenn Ford, because he reminds me of my Dad (ok you armchair shrinks, I know that's Freudian). William Holden's pretty cool, too. Omar Sharif (as Dr. Zhivago) and Jeancarlo Giannini.
Bing Crosby's so suave it's not hard to look beyond those ears.
And then there's Greg. Greg Peck was a gorgeous guy when he was young and just got handsomer as the decades wore on.
NOT SEXY
I simply cannot understand how anyone could find John Wayne sexy. Don't see it, don't feel it. Clark Gable, Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, James Dean -- pretty much any leading man from the 40s, 50s and 60s that others swoon over, I'll gladly pass on. That includes Frank Sinatra and Humphrey Bogart, although I do enjoy watching him flirt with Lauren, Ingrid and Kate.

The men who light my fire these days
Those who say Sean Connery has ripened with age are absolutely right. He was good as Bond, but from "The Untouchables" on he's been a silver fox. Same thing with Burt Reynolds. I never thought much of him, but in "Boogie Nights" I noticed how flawlessly he'd turned out. Anthony Hopkins in "Remains of the Day" but not "Silence of the Lambs." Ben Kingsley's got a certain somethin' somethin' too, as does Jeremy Irons (although I don't much care for his teeth).
Paul Newman and Robert Redford are timelessly etched in my memory as "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." Although Newman remained gorgeous till the end and Redford's more of a political figure these days.
My list of all-purpose male crushes includes: Pierce Brosnan, Kevin Spacey, Alan Rickman (yes, even with a black robe and hair in Harry Potter), Tommy Lee Jones and Christopher Walken. Don't ask me to explain the appeal of CW. It's somehow related to his NY accent and his ability to play any kind of wacko you could name. Maybe it's that he shares his initials with our very own stud Constant Walker! I've always liked Joe Montegna (especially in plays by David Mamet). I don't need it, but I'd let Andy Garcia send me to rehab anyway, as he did for Meg Ryan in "When a Man Loves a Woman." Tim Robbins is another one I wouldn't toss out of bed. But I know that's never gonna happen on Susan Sarandon's watch:-).
I like Ralph Fiennes but his brother Joseph, not so much. I also like Liam Neeson. Daniel Day-Lewis is borderline. Hard to get some of his unsavory roles out of my head.
Colin Firth will always epitomize Mr. Darcy for me (although Matthew Macfadyen made quite a mark on the role against Keira Knightley).
Of the younger set, I definitely dig Vince Vaughn and Matthew McConaughey and have a major (I mean, to the point where Hubby gets jealous) crush on Owen Wilson. But the best of the lot is Edward Norton. Be still my heart (and other twitching parts).
A FEW THAT GREW
A girlfriend of mine used to gush on and on about Johnny Depp. Sorry, but "Edward Scissorhands" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" did not portray JD as a studmuffin. But I started paying attention and soon changed my tune.
Same with Brad Pitt. Ok, I grant you he was a nice little tease in "Thelma and Louise" but aside from that he didn't do a lot for me. He's another one who's become more attractive with age. Maybe it's all that sex with Angelina Jolie.
Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt Damon will never be "sexy" in my book. But I've come to respect them as actors and they've both grown into manhood very smoothly.
NOT SEXY
I'll concede that Will Smith is adorable, but not in a sexual way.
Colin Farrell -- too arrogant. Hugh Grant -- too wussy. Ben Stiller -- funny, but too Fockeresque. Denzel Washington -- too overexposed, with Jamie Foxx right behind him. Tom Cruise -- too schizo (and he'd probably make me go off my meds:-).
Jake Gyllenhall -- seems like a nice enough guy, but not my cup of tea. Same with Joaquin Phoenix.
And finally, a few that I adore as actors but just can't seem to give it up for:
Tom Hanks, John Travolta and Sean Penn.
Who have I left out?
I'm quite sure I've left out some household names that should be obvious. Sorry, but I've reached my saturation point for the night.
I hope you'll set me straight and toss in your favorites for consideration.
Til then, happy drooling! MM
CommentsLoading...
Well, I have read about a lot of ladies droooling over Travolta :P
Christopher Plummer, Charles Bronson , Tommy Lee Jones all do it for me, there is one ,and his name always eludes me, everytime a conversation like this comes up , I can never remember, will have to think..will add it when it comes to me!
OMG I LOVE Eric Burdon and the Animals and T Rex too. In the movie realm I was always kind of partial to Harrison Ford. My guilty pleasure crush would be Keanu Reeves. (Hey junk food is a major food group!)
MM, always so interesting to see who women thank are sexy - and why. And thanks for the mention. Christopher Walken is fascinating. I love the guy's very unique voice, and have you seen that video (can't remember which one) in which he dances all the way through it in a mall? He can really dance! And Alan Rickman does some of my favorite bad-guy (and bad-guy-ish) characters.
I was surprised not to see the "Supernatural" dudes included. They're the mainstream hunks-du jour these days.
And the Animals, wow! My favorite song was "Sky Pilot." Few people have ever even heard it, but it's one of their best.
Wow! That was quite a list and I was pleased to see that we were in agreement on a LOT of them. I also had a thing for Peter Tork...but then again, there was something about Michael Nesmith too. I think it was because he held the power and I've always been attracted to men who rule, even if it's just a band.
Johnny Depp grew on me too. I think my turning point though was Chocolat. *fans myself* And who would have thought that a pirate would have that effect on me...
Bobby Sherman definitely over David Soul. I'm a sucker for blue eyes and dark hair. Peter Strauss in Rich Man, Poor Man...I thought he was the epitome of masculinity. Men that make me laugh also rank high...Danny Kaye, Robin Williams, Howie Mandel.
Tommy Lee Jones is still a favorite of mine...that crusty old curmudgeonly attitude doesn't fool me for a second. Val Kilmer made me want to be his Huckleberry in Tombstone...although Sam Elliot and Kurt Russell were definitely not to be sneezed at.
Never saw the attraction of Patrick Swayze.
Currently, I'm leaning more toward Russell Crowe - Vigo Mortensen - Hugh Jackman. *swoon*
Nice job and way to get my heart pounding in the morning. Better than coffee!!
MM, Here's a link to "Supernatural"s site: http://www.cwtv.com/cw-video/supernatural
It really is a very good show. Honest!
Val Kilmer and Pierce Brosnan, you certainly do know how to pick them. I have seen "To Kill A Mockingbird" multiple times and what a handsome man he was too!! They don't make handsome like that anymore....:)
Russell Crowe.
(Sorry, I always get a bit overcome when I think about Russell Crowe.)
Robert D'Niro in The Mission
Warning: Someone's been putting something in the water at hubpages. Pretty soon, instead of referring to the "Indian hubs," we'll be saying, "those chick hubs." Well done, I guess, if your a girl. But seriously, you did name a lot of my favorites at whatever they do, so I happen to think you have great taste.
Ever since I watched Paul Newman in 'Exodus' it's driven every other contender out of my mind! :P
Great choices MM - drooooooollll!!! :D
Hugh Jackman and Jude Law would be my choice of additions!
Daniel Day-Lewis in 'Last of the Mohicans', Orlando Bloom as Legolas in 'Lord of the Rings' (he was so cute with those pointy ears!) Pierce Brosnan in just about anything, the voice of Antonio Banderez (how sexy is that voice!) Harrison Ford as Han Solo in 'Star Wars', Heath Ledger in 'Knight's Tale', oh, and Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson!
MM, you should watch one of the episodes which are viewable at that site. If you like horror-based shows (with a generous dose of humor) you'll like this show. Sometimes, mainstream gets it right!
Soooo, I'm not a celebrity yet?
No I wish I was more like Denzel, that guy is a hundred and still looks the same. I saw Jimmy on Dexter this last season and he looked a bit out of shape, but Denzel just keeps getting better.
Yeah, he is versatile and I don't know if I have ever seen him in a bad movie. I watched the Great Debaters last month and that was a tremendous movie.
Great list. good to see who your interests are. It says a lot about you. It's funny how some of these guys can grow on you. I have gotten a crush on some of the celebrities I crush on because of interviews and their opiions about things and then some I thought you were so cute why did you have to open your mouth.
You have a fairly eclectic mix of hunks here lassie.
MM, great list of hunks! I laughed when I got to the Monkeys because Davey never made me swoon either. There was something too feminine about him. My favorite was Micky Dolenz and sometimes Mike. :)
John Travolta wasn't so cute to me until he got much older, now he's marvelous looking. Johnny Depp will always be hot in my book too. But I'll tell you who really does it for me is Craig Ferguson. Yes indeed. :)
I'm apparently out of the mainstream when it comes to a lot of these. To me, a lot of the "ones" today kind of look like somebody's aunt.
To me, here's some attractive folks: (I know I'm overlooking a bunch of people and kind of digging up some. I had a "mad, great, love affair" with a dark-haired, dark-eyed, pink-shirted, boy in third grade; and it's difficult for me to find people who measure up since then. :) )
Dead Guys: Cary Grant, Johnny Carson (after he got to a certain age)
Old Guys Still Attractive: Harrison Ford, Patrick Stewart - and an old guy who isn't attractive but who is strangely appealing, Rod Stewart.
Bordering on Old Guys: Denzel Washington
Old Guys Who Used to Be Attractive: Robert Redford, Omar Shariff, BJ Thomas and (probably because I was 14 when he was around) Peter Noone, Placido Domingo
Guys Too Young for Me, But Not All That Young: Hugh Jackman, Luke Wilson (sometimes), David Ducoveny (only sometimes, depending on his hairdo), Dermott Mulroney (in a way), Brad Pitt (if he's do something about some of those hairdos of his)
Anybody younger than any of the above are people I can't even imagine finding attractive "for me" or seeing them as "young enough to be my sons".
Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Denny on Grey's) and Gerard Butler (300) and both were in PS I love you. Irish accents, and a six pack?? Oh boy! :)
Richard Gere, oh my gosh. I couldn't not kiss you on the lips. And i don't care about the rules.
Leonardo Dicaprio. Yum. And I grew up watching him from when he was like 13...
Javier Bardem, in Vicky Cristina... I'm going to Spain tomorrow!
James Franco, he can: get high, kill spiderman, and kiss sean penn and i'd still find him hott
Jonathan Rhys Meyers: From Tudors... mmm so not what Henry VIII looked like, but who cares, I get to look at the hot version.
Emile Hirsch: Guess I just love adorable.
Jared Leto: Ok so his acting gigs haven't been too great yet. With or without eyeliner, he's gorgeous.
If we include singers, and other celebs I could sooo add to this list (David Beckham, John Mayer, Justin Timberlake, just to name a few).
(PS I can't add Johnny Depp to this list, he went to high school with my dad, and that's just gross)
Yeah he kinda had a drinking problem, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I'll have to think for a moment to complete my list :)
Ok, didn't take me long to think about it,
Jim Sturgess- Jude in Across the Universe... and he can sing :)
Keith Urban- watch out Nicole Kidman, there's another Cole in the picture!
Robert Downey Jr- I had to do a project on Charlie Chaplin in the 5th grade. After I watched the movie... I was hooked.
Almost make my list:
Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, James McAvoy, Adam Brody, Paul Rudd
You seem to favor the newer celebrities, and I agree with most of your choices but how can you not find Clark Gable as Rhett Butler, or Cary Grant in anything, sexy. Not only did these stars of the golden age of cinema have sex appeal, but they were all exceptional actors, which isn't necessarily the case with the celebrities of today. But they are nice to look at, I'll give you that.
Do you know what ,I still can't recall, all I can see is his face..dammit
Finally got here, Mighty Mom, after a week of training to do Census work. (Would be a lot happier about this if they'd let me know you had to read a map. When it comes to being geographically challenged, I'm the proverbial village idiot!)
This is absolutely super. I may not agree with all your choices and I may have apoplexy over one or two: I mean, Owen Wilson and not John Wayne? That to me is very much like leaving Sean Connery at the altar in order to run away with Barney Fife! But I loved reading every word and all the comments, too!
You reminded me that Alan Rickman should have been near the top of my own list. Sex on a stick, as one of my British friends used to say about her favorites (and she was in her seventies at the time).
Gee, this *has* been fun. I hope more hubbers will do the same. The 'why we feel the way we do' is almost as interesting as the who.
Oh, and you got me right in the solar plexus with Napoleon and Ilya. I was nuts about both of them - I mean nuts!!! I leaned toward Ilya but must say it was nice to have both (in my fantasies) for the price of one!
John Wayne's real name was Marion Robert Morrison. I don't think he was as rugged as his persona made him be. Maybe that was just for the movies? :)
wow - so cool to see a list of dead celebrities still considered hot...i always went for Lawrence Olivier even though my mother wondered what i saw in him - too sissy for her until near the end of her life and we watched wuthering heights together and she said - never mind
Hoobloodyray , I have remembered, BRUCE WILLIS there now I don't think I will ever forget now.
You got a lot of dishes here MM, and may I say good taste in men. Oh but give me Hugh Jackman anyday and I will oooooo. I don't know if you saw the movie 'Australia" where he takes his shirt off and ........(I fainted again, where are the smelling saltsLMAO)
I agree Rolling stones, nah they don't do nothing for me.Mick Jaggers big balloon lips would be like having a vacuum cleaner suckling at your face, eeeekkk
Oh goodness MM, well, I have to many of my own loves to list, so I'll comment on some of yours :)-- LOVE Paul Newman & Robert Redford, was a huge Davy Jones fan, will always have a place for Eddie Vedder (though I think it's more for the music) Eddie Garcia in WAMLAW- and Colin Firth, but prefer Matt Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy, oh I could go on and on--do have to mention a couple tho-Steve Mcqueen (in his earlier years) and Tom Selleck will always be sexy. LOVE Hugh Jackman--in everything! and two of my first crushes were Scott baio (who I'll always adore) and John Stamos from full house days. Have to agree with your not sexy choices, too. Oh goodness...I am far too boy crazy!!
What a great list you have here. I am happy to see Alan Rickman on it. He is so frequently overlooked as a hottie :)
I also like Jeremy Irons (super voice), Al Pacino, and the young Rutger Hauer (especially in Ladyhawke and Blade Runner).
More recent hotties - Daniel Craig, Daniel Craig, and did I mention Daniel Craig? :D
I have seen that version of "Sense and Sensibility" many times! Ah, I would have gone for Alan Rickman right off - that Willoughby guy just *did not* do it for me :D
Ah yes, poor Jeremy Irons, has not been very picky with his roles - lol. Still, his voice is to die for.
fun article and I do like Johnny Depp, I think he is such an amazing actor. I have to agreee with psycho on tom cruz, my favorite now is a young man that plays on the new vampire series, blue eyes and dark hair very good looking cant remember his name though!

hmmmm, I quite fancied Roger Daltrey in The Who, and for some reason Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Alan Bates as Gabriel Oak in Far from the Madding Crowd, Terence Stamp in the same movie, ummmm, can't remember his name now...Treat Williams in Hair, Mickey Rourcke when he starred in 9 and a half weeks, Jack Nicholson in A postman Rings Twice, Dave Stewart from The Eurythmics, Sting, Michael Hutchins or whatever his name was from INXS, Heath Ledger...
