Songs About Triumph Over Cancer

By Mighty Mom

This hub is dedicated to Darlin' Karlin

When you're fighting cancer, every day is a milestone.

I have never had cancer, but I know way too many people who have, and  who do. I've seen beautiful, bald women battling breast cancer at the Komen Race for the Cure. My son's father survived a rare form of rectal cancer. My father-in-law died of lymphoma.  My beloved uncle died of lung cancer. The list goes on.

This being my 50th hub, I wanted to make it special.

This hub is for Karlin. My beautiful, strong, amazingly gracious friend who is fighting for her life. Karlin just finished her 11th grueling week of chemotherapy. She's getting ready to have surgery to remove what remains of the tumor in her breast. The good news is it's down from 4cm to .5cm. She is optimistic it can be a lumpectomy instead of more invasive surgery.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of people praying for Karlin. She is surrounded by love. As I said above, Karlin is strong.

Music is healing. It's a universal fact.

These songs are for her -- and for anyone who is facing tough challenges. Here's to Karlin. Here's to beating breast cancer. Here's to triumphing over life's obstacles.

#1 Karlin, you will always be beautiful

#2 You will be healed

#3 Sistah, I know you can make it!

#4 You've got the power

#5 Your faith will lead you on

#6 That cancer: Beat It!!!

#7 You are a brightly shining star

#8 Only the strong survive: Old School

#9 Only the strong survive: New School

#10 You've gotta LOTTA friends

#11 It's gonna be a brighter day!

#12 You CAN make it if you try!

#13 You WILL survive!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thirteen songs

I'm hoping 13 will be a lucky number. Please feel free to add your own song suggestions, including links if you feel like it. Music is powerful. Let's drown that icky cancer out with good thoughts and beautiful notes!!!

Hi MM, you are wonderful to be so supportive to your friend. Breast cancer is horrible as you don't look sick so you don't know that you're walking around carrying a time bomb. Did you read the hub I wrote about my breast cancer experience? It was called When mammograms are wrong

You are a good friend - Karlin is lucky to have you.

I've always liked the Bad Co. song "Shooting Star," but are you sure you want to use that one? The shooting Star dies in the song!

Hi CW. Good point about the Bad Company song. Although it's about Johnny and he's a musician. Still, I wouldn't want to inadvertently give Karlin death karma. I think I will switch that song out for something more positive.

Thanks! MM

I think I would too. It's such a cool song, but that whole dying young rockstar (so over done!) kinda soured me on it.

I once dedicated "Wind Bbeneath My Wings" to my mother when she was passing gallstones, and ever-so-miserable, that song and a giant get-well card singed by everybody I knew. She said it made her laugh - and cry (in a good way) and made the experience not quite so bad.

The support system is EVERYTHING.

Thank you. I will pass this along to a couple of people who would appreciate and enjoy it. I'll think of Karlin in my meditation moments.

What a beautiful tribute. My mom battled cancer for awhile as well, so I know how powerful songs can be... wind beaneath my wings is still one that brings me to my knees, handful of tears and all. I wish your friend all the best, best, best- nothing but the best from here on out.

I'm putting together a mix CD for my friend who has non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I Googled "songs about triumph" and was brought here. I'm using two of your songs, "I Will Survive" and "You've Got a Friend" on her CD. So far, other songs include "The Remedy" by Jason Mraz (which I'm told he wrote for a friend with cancer), "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty, "Whip It" by Devo (When a problem comes along, you must whip it!) and Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (just because it's SO pretty).

Hi Andrea. That is a lovely idea. Music truly is healing as well as soothing (or invigorating). My friend's cancer is chased out (she and her kids posted signs all over the house to banish cancer, in addition to a bunch of other things). Good luck.

BTW, if it's any consolation/help, the chemo for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is "mild" compared to others. My father-in-law got Retaxin and he didn't lose his hair or get sick or anything. I wish you and your friend we.. MM

Hello Dana,

Thank you for sharing your pain here. I'm so sorry to hear about all the death in your life. I wish your mom peace.

You are stronger than you think. You will get through this -- you have to for your kids.

I do hope you can keep expressing your feelings. Lots of people can relate. They can relate to life after your rock is taken from you.

There is sometimes no rhyme or reason to grief, it seems. It is part of life, just as joy is part of life.

Sending you healing hugs. MM

Great hub!! :) As a cancer survivor myself, music definitely got me through many, many treatments and sleepless nights. It's important to stay positive- Of course when I was going through it I listened to a lot of Coldplay and Morrissey. hehe. I really enjoyed your hub :)
